Swedlex - Swedish language examinations

The test costs 100 EUR 

Swedlex is an examination in Swedish as a foreign language further development in a Lingua 2 project, co-financed bythe European Commission. The project was concluded on 31 December 2003.

Swedlex is available at three levels: A2, B1 and B2 on the level of attainment scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Swedlex tests all language skills at each level.

All Swedlex examinators are graduated to Testledare at Kursverksamheten, Göteborgs universitet, Sweden.


At what levels is Swedlex available?
Swedlex is available at levels corresponding to A2, B1 and B2 according to the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

How do I know at which linguistic level I am?
You can get to know your level through placement tests at Swedcenter where you can try evaluating your knowledge for yourself.

When can I use Swedlex?
Swedlex is proof of knowledge of Swedish at a level corresponding to A2, B1 or B2 according to the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.You can use it if you for example want to work in Sweden. On the back of the certificates there is a description in Swedish and English of what you should know at each level.

What is Swedlex' level in relation to the Swedish Sfi exam?
Swedlex B1 approximately corresponds to the level for Sfi, course D. However, an important difference is that the Sfi exam tests whether you have passed a specific course while Swedlex tests general knowledge of Swedish.

Give Swedlex you eligible to study at a Swedish university?
No, Swedlex  does not give you the right for university studies in Swedish. There is a specific exam of Swedish for higher education: TISUS.

Do I need to take a specific course in Swedish before taking Swedlex?
Swedlex is an independent exam of Swedish. It does not matter where you have learnt Swedish.

Where can I take Swedlex?  Swedlex can be taken at Swedlex test centers in Sweden and in 5 places outside Sweden.

How old do I have to be in order to take Swedlex?
You should not have Swedish as your mother tongue and be at least 18 years old.

When do I have to apply to take the exam?
Normally 2 weeks before the exam. But it is possible until a week before the exam. Please contact the Swedlex centre..

How much does it cost to take Swedlex?  

The price is 120EUR.

How do I apply for Swedlex?
You apply trought the Swedlex bookingsystem. Testdays 2020. 13 april.. 16 may. 21 september. 14 december 

What does Swedlex exam contain?
Swedlex exams all kinds of language proficiency. The following modules are included in the exam:
Reading comprehension. Words & Grammar (level A2 & B1). Listening comprehension .Written examination. Oral examination

How long does the exam take?
Swedlex A2 - B2 takes around 4 hours. The exam candidates are tested one by one.

Can I use any aids?
No aids can be used during the exam.

Is it possible to take the exam again?
Yes, you can take Swedlex again but you have to do it in its entirety. You cannot do a particular module. You have to pay a new fee.

How is the exam constructed?
The written parts at A2 and B1 levels (reading and listening comprehension, words and grammar, written exam) are added up at the appraisal. The oral part is as appraised separately. You have to manage at least 60% on both the written and the oral part in order to pass. A summarized grade will be given. The following grades are used:
Pass with credit. Pass. Fail. For the B2 exam other rules apply; here only the grades Pass och Fail are given. Swedlex B2 consists of four exam modules. For every module you can pass, reach the minimum limit or fail. In order to pass the whole exam, you have to reach the Pass level on at least three (3) exam modules and the minimum limit of maximally one (1) module. It does not matter on which module(s) you get a Pass or reach the minimum limit.

If you have failed a module, you have failed the exam in its entirety. This means you have to take the whole exam again next time.
18. Is it possible to pass the exam even if I fail an exam module?
At the A2 and B1 levels you have to pass the oral part (at least 60% ). The points on the written parts (reading comprehension, words and grammar, listening comprehension and the written exam) are added up. You must have at least 60% of the total number of points in order to pass. Thus, it is possible to fail one of the modules and still pass.

At the B2 level you must have reached the Pass level on at least three (3) modules and the minimum limit on maximally one (1) module. It does not matter which module(s) you have passed if you have reached the minimum limit. If you have failed a module, it means that you have failed the exam in its entirety.

Will I get a certificate?
When  have passed the exam you will receive a certificate which shows the results on the various modules of the exam.

When will  I get my certificate?
The exam candidates will have their certificates within 2 weeks after the exam.

How many hours of study is required to successfully reach a level within CEFR?

It takes approximately 200 guided learning hours to progress from one level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to the next.
